World’s Largest Corn Maze- Richardson Farm After Hours
Do you love corn mazes? How about the world’s largest corn maze? Are you intrigued yet? Corn mazes and Fall go hand in hand so I had to try one this year. To tell you the truth I have a fear of getting so lost in a corn maze that everyone will leave and I’ll be left overnight- probably because of my lack of directional sense.
Well, I conquered my fear (and survived!) and went to Richardson Farm in Spring Grove, IL and I’m so glad I did. Spring Grove is about 1 1/2 hours Northwest of Chicago, near the Wisconsin border. We even went to a night event when they were open until midnight. The corn mazes were lit by moonlight – and our phone flashlights. However, as the night went on and the moon rose in the sky, we didn’t even need our flashlights, but some people brought real flashlights or camping head lamps to feel comfortable.
There are 4 corn mazes woven throughout 28 acres of corn that together create a carved out landscape picture. This year’s theme is Jurassic Park to celebrate the 30th anniversary. The atmosphere was so fun and it was a different experience walking through the mazes at night. You can take a card that has numbers on it and as you walk through the various mazes, you can look for the numbered posts and use the hole punch to complete your adventure. Dominic and I went with 2 of our girls, but there were families with younger children as well and it was perfectly suited for all ages. It was dark, but not scary.
The next time they’re open until midnight is Friday, 10/27/23 and Saturday, 10/28/23. We purchased our tickets online ahead of time, but there were people walking up and buying tickets. We didn’t go Halloween weekend though so you may want to take that into consideration.
There are other activities you can do at the farm too. There’s a big slide that goes down the side of a hill. It has 2 slides next to one another, perfect for racing. Dominic beat me- boo! Besides the world’s largest corn maze and slide, there’s a zip line and observation tower, ORBiting (ride inside a giant 11′ ball), jumping pillows, live pig races (check the times), pedal carts, wagon rides, pumpkin patch, picnic areas and campfires, a little area to feed some goats, food trucks, and of course a gift shop (you can’t leave without buying some apple cider donuts). No one will be bored at this place! NOTE: some of the activities cost extra like the zip line and ORBiting.
We were there about 3 hours and walked through all the corn mazes. We didn’t find all the numbered posts so I know we missed a lot of the area. There’s no way we walked around 28 acres of land:) We also went down the slide a couple of times and stopped for something to drink and hung out by a campfire for about half hour. If you want to do more of the activities, then you’ll probably want to count on being there longer.
Learn all about the mazes here and see some pictures too!
You can check out how the maze is made right here and see past mazes. It’s amazing that they can create such an intricate design in corn.
